A hawk is painted in underglaze blue on a large plate. The eagle looks as if it is about to take flight, a beautiful and artistic work of art. In this ware, the hawk's glaring eyes are sharply defined, and even the hawk's wings and the leaves of the pine trees are painted with great precision. In the technique of underglaze blue, cobalt oxide-based pigments are applied to unglazed clay, which is then fired to produce an indigo blue color. The underglaze painting is protected by a glaze over the painted surface, so the coloring does not fade. However, because it is difficult to distinguish the intensity and color at the painting stage, it is difficult to create as detailed a painting as overglaze painting.
